Pico Austria (5,350 m) offers a rewarding summit trek, perfect for adventurers seeking to experience the majesty of Bolivia’s Cordillera Real. This scenic route unveils breathtaking panoramas of the Condoriri Valley’s massifs, framed by beautiful lagoons and rugged highland terrain. Known as one of the most popular peaks in the region, Pico Austria provides a manageable challenge for those staying in La Paz, with sweeping 360° views of the Royal Range, including the iconic peaks of Condoriri, Pequeño Alpamayo, and Huayna Potosí.
This trek is also ideal for acclimatization, offering the chance to adjust to high altitudes and build stamina in preparation for the ascent of Bolivia’s 6,000-meter summits. With every step, hikers are immersed in the unique flora and fauna of the Andes, making Pico Austria a perfect blend of natural beauty, highland adventure, and panoramic rewards.
Passing through lagoons and valleys we find the imposing hill, Pico Austria at 5350m, one of the simplest peaks, it is an acclimatization trail and offers an impressive view of the Condoriri valley and part of the Cordillera Real.
It is a basically simple trek, no special mountain equipment is required.
The ascent has between 40 to 50 degrees of inclination.
We depart from La Paz at 7:00 a.m., embarking on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to the Palcoco sector and onwards to Condoriri - La Rinconada (4,500 m). From here, we begin a one-hour hike to Laguna Chiarkhota, the Base Camp at 4,650 m, where breathtaking views of the Royal Range’s towering peaks over 5,000 m await. Along the way, we’ll enjoy the striking Altiplano landscape, spotting sturdy llamas, adorable alpacas, native wildlife, pristine lagoons, and unique Andean flora.
Our journey continues with a 3-hour ascent to the summit of Pico Austria (5,330 m). From the top, we are rewarded with an incredible 360˚ panorama of the Royal Range. Here, we’ll take a well-deserved break to enjoy a snack, capture the stunning views, and rest. Later, we descend back to Base Camp in approximately 2 hours, followed by a 1-hour return to La Rinconada, where our transportation awaits for the drive back to La Paz.
