Rising majestically to an altitude of 6,368 meters, Illampu is a formidable jewel and stands as the most imposing peak of the Cordillera Real of Bolivia. Located to the north in the picturesque valley town of Sorata. In the Andean worldview, Illampu is revered as one of the greatest deities, known as “Kun Tixi Wiracocha” or the “maker of waters.” This sacred mountain is considered the creator of the world, the protector of life, and the supreme god of the Andean Olympus.

Technicality

It is considered one of the most challenging 6,000-meter peaks in the Andes for ascension. The classic route ascends via the southwest side of the mountain, featuring a TD+ technical rating (Très Difficile Plus), with slopes reaching up to 65° of inclination. This demanding climb requires advanced mountaineering skills, exceptional physical endurance, and a solid understanding of technical techniques such as ice and mixed climbing

DAY 1.

We depart La Paz in the morning, embarking on a scenic drive through the highlands and a picturesque valley, traveling for approximately 3 to 4 hours. Passing through the charming town of Sorata, we arrive at Lakatía (3,900 m), the starting point of our trek. Here, mules assist in transporting our technical equipment as we hike for about 4 hours through stunning landscapes to reach Camp I (Aguas Calientes) at 4,200 m. We will set up camp and spend the night surrounded by the serenity of the mountains.

DÍA 2.

In the morning, we set out on a challenging yet rewarding trek to Campamento Alto (5,600 m). With the assistance of porters, we navigate diverse terrain, including rugged moraines, shimmering glaciers, and rocky paths. The journey takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys as we ascend. Upon arrival, we settle in and prepare for the final push to the summit.

DAY 3.

At midnight, we begin our ascent from Campamento Alto, tackling a steep wall with inclines ranging from 55° to 70°, spanning approximately 300 meters. Reaching 6,240 m, we navigate a crevasse that guides us to the summit at 6,368 m. From the top, we are rewarded with breathtaking views of Illampu in all its glory.

After savoring the moment, we begin our descent, performing a long rappel to safely navigate the steep sections. We then make our way back to Campamento Alto and continue descending to Aguas calientes for the night.

Día 4.

After a well-deserved rest, we enjoy a hearty breakfast before beginning our descent. The trail leads us back to Lakatía, where our transport awaits. Relishing the memories of our adventure, we embark on the drive back to La Paz, arriving in the afternoon.
