Sharing the border between Bolivia and Chile, Acotango is the fourth highest mountain in the Western Cordillera, reaching 6,077 m, and is located within Sajama National Park. Its summit offers spectacular views of Sajama Volcano and the Payachata volcanoes. According to geological studies, this volcano erupted approximately 1,000 years ago; from the summit, its open crater can be clearly seen, the result of a massive lateral explosion. In ancient times, the Incas had a sanctuary on this peak and carried out ceremonial offerings to the summit in honor of Pachamama.
Acotango is the easiest 6,000-meter peak in the Andes, offering a non-technical climb. Along the way, climbers are treated to stunning views of neighboring volcanoes such as Sajama, Parinacota, and Pomarape, as well as unique volcanic landscapes with sulfur deposits and crater rims. Located within Sajama National Park, the route showcases breathtaking Andean scenery, high-altitude deserts, and endemic flora and fauna. After the climb, visitors can relax in nearby natural hot springs while capturing unforgettable photographic moments of this dramatic landscape.
It is a basic mountain with no large glaciers or ice climbing sections. It can be climbed without prior mountaineering experience, without crampons, and by using trekking poles instead of an ice axe. However, the strong winds of the Western Cordillera and changing weather conditions can make the ascent more challenging.

We depart from La Paz and begin a fascinating 4-hour journey by private transport across the Altiplano. Along the way, we will witness impressive rock formations shaped by time, each telling its own story.
Our destination is the majestic Sajama National Park, located at 4,000 meters above sea level, Bolivia’s first protected area. Here, we immerse ourselves in an environment of unparalleled natural beauty.
We spend the night in a hostel in the picturesque small village of Sajama, at 4,238 meters, just 10 km from the Chilean border. This small and welcoming village will be our base for acclimatization and preparation for the adventure ahead.

We wake up at 01:00 a.m. for breakfast, dress for cold conditions, and prepare our backpacks. The adventure begins with a challenging 4x4 drive to Acotango High Camp (5,300 m), where the ascent starts along an old trail once used by abandoned mining operations.
As we climb, the first light of dawn reveals the breathtaking beauty of the Andean landscape. The route follows the ridge of a vast crater, where each step brings us closer to the sky.
After 4 to 5 hours of steady climbing, we reach the Bolivian summit of Acotango (6,077 m). From the top, we are rewarded with incomparable panoramic views: glimpses of the distant Atacama Desert, the immense Altiplano, and neighboring volcanoes that seem almost within reach.
After photos and a well-earned rest, we descend from the summit by the same Bolivian route. We then take our 4x4 back to the village of Sajama, where we enjoy lunch and a well-deserved rest.

In the morning, we enjoy an excellent breakfast to recharge our energy. Before returning to La Paz, we take transport to the hot springs, where we relax in naturally warm pools surrounded by a spectacular Andean setting.
We return to the village of Sajama for a delicious lunch, and then begin the journey back to La Paz, carrying with us unforgettable memories of a truly unique and rewarding experience.
