The Condoriri Valley, nestled in the heart of the Cordillera de Real of Bolivia, is renowned for its breathtaking landscape and impressive peaks. This region is home to thirteen summits exceeding 5,000 meters, each contributing to its dramatic and rugged beauty. Among these towering giants is the Pequeño Alpamayo, a snow-capped marvel often celebrated for its striking profile and challenging climbs.
Pequeño Alpamayo, standing at 5,450 meters, is known for its pyramid-like shape and its glaciated slopes. Its snow-covered summit offers a striking contrast against the surrounding rugged terrain. The mountain’s appeal is enhanced by its relatively accessible and technical climbing routes, as well as its spectacular views, making it a highly sought-after peak for those looking to experience high-altitude mountaineering.
The valley’s Base Camp, located on the north shore of Laguna Chiarkhota, serves as a scenic and strategic starting point for climbers and trekkers. From here, adventurers can embark on various routes that offer not only challenging climbs but also unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks, including the awe-inspiring Pequeño Alpamayo. This camp is a hub of activity, attracting outdoor enthusiasts who come to immerse themselves in the stunning beauty and adventure that Condoriri Valley has to offer.
Its base glacier provides excellent playing grounds for beginner ice climbing sessions. Its calm climb scales a breathtaking ridge toward an impressive peak that many call their first High Mountain summit. The summit is worth the effort, unique experience!
Pequeño Alpamayo is known as one of the easiest mountain to climb. Its base glacier is full of crevasses, but with a comfortable incline. The climb includes two summits, first Pico Tarija, with a small descent across a rocky passage that proves more difficult on the return. The main summit has a steep ridge of 60° that is climbed with caution, however only a classical ice axe is required

We travel by vehicle for about 2 hours from La Paz, passing through the Palcoco Valley until we reach La Rinconada. There, we load our gear onto the mules and, carrying only our light daypacks, begin a hike of approximately 1 hour through the Condoriri Valley to Laguna Chiarkhota (4,650 m), where our Base Camp is located.
Afterward, we continue with a 3-hour hike to the summit of Pico Austria (5,350 m), enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the Cordillera Real, before returning to Base Camp to spend the night.

This day is designed to support altitude acclimatization and help regain energy before the summit attempt of Pequeño Alpamayo. We will take a gentle hike around the camp area, making the most of the stunning landscape of the Condoriri Valley. The afternoon will be dedicated to rest, hydration, and preparing gear, ensuring optimal physical and mental conditions for the upcoming ascent.

In the early morning, after a hearty breakfast, we leave Base Camp and hike for about 1 hour through the valley to reach the glacier of La Pequeña Ilusión (4,950 m). We begin the climb through the central part of the glacier, ascending to Pico Tarija (5,300 m) in approximately 2 hours.
From there, we descend a short rocky section before starting a new ascent that leads us to the ridge of Pequeño Alpamayo. We face a technical 80-meter climb with a slope of around 55°, reaching the summit (5,450 m) in about 2 more hours.
We then descend via the same route back to Base Camp, where we take a short break and have a light meal. Afterward, we load our gear onto the mules and hike down with light backpacks to La Rinconada, where our transport will be waiting. We arrive back in La Paz at approximately 6:00 p.m.
