Peñas at 3970 meters above sea level is distinguished by its imposing rock formations, offering climbers a challenging yet rewarding experience. Located 59 km from the city of La Paz, this picturesque high-altitude valley is the ideal starting point to explore the majestic mountains of the Cordillera Real.

The region is known for its diverse climbing routes and unparalleled natural beauty, promising a truly memorable climbing day. In addition to its geographical features, Peñas is a place of cultural interest. The local community has a unique connection to climbing; the village church has a climbing priest, adding a distinctive touch to the area’s tradition.

Historically, Peñas also holds a significant place in La Paz’s history. It was here that the indigenous leader Tupac Katari was captured by Spanish forces after his two sieges of the city of La Paz. His capture and execution, after refusing to accept the pardon offered by the colonizers, mark an important chapter in the region’s history.

Technicality

The rock formations in Peñas offer a variety of climbing types, from sport routes with fixed anchors to traditional routes requiring removable protection.

  • Beginners: There are more accessible routes with moderate difficulty grades (5.6 to 5.8 on the American grading system). These routes typically have good hold features and are ideal for getting started with climbing.
  • Intermediate: Medium difficulty routes (5.9 to 5.11). These routes present additional technical challenges, such as smaller holds and more complex moves.
  • Advanced: More challenging routes (5.12 and up). These routes require advanced techniques and a high level of skill and endurance.

Day 1.

Meeting with the guide, equipment check, and fitting. We depart for Peñas in a private vehicle, approximately 2 hours from downtown La Paz. The guide will provide information about the itinerary, the area and the climbing routes.

Upon arrival at Peñas, we distribute the equipment and begin a hike of approximately 1.5 hours to reach the climbing walls. This serves as a warm-up before climbing, and we review the routes and safety measures before starting. We climb various routes adapted to the skill levels of the participants, with continuous supervision from the guide to ensure safety and enjoyment.

At noon, we have a picnic lunch at the base of the rocks, with time to relax, socialize, and enjoy the natural surroundings.

In the afternoon, we continue climbing different routes, exploring new rock formations and additional challenges.

To conclude, we descend the routes, dismantle the equipment, and review the day's activities. There will be time for feedback and reflection on the day's experience.

We return to the transportation and arrive back in La Paz around 6:00 PM.
