Straddling Bolivia’s border with Chile, Acotango is the fourth highest mountain in the Cordillera Occidental at 6,077 masl. and it is within the Sajama national Park. Its summit provides spectacular views of the volcano Sajama and the two Payachata Volcanoes. Calculations show that this volcano erupted 1000 years ago and its summit view shows its large open crater as a product of an immense lateral explotion. It is believed that in ancient times, the Incas held a sanctuary on this peak and would carry sacrifices up the mountain to offer to the Pachamama.
The Easiest 6000 mt. in the world to climb. With an altitude just under that of Huayna Potosí, Acotango is much less technical and can be climbed in two days, without technical gear.
Admire incredible views of the cordillera occidental from the top.
Acotango is very basic and has no large glaciers or ice climbs. It can be climbed with no previous mountain experience, without crampons and using trekking poles instead of an ice axe. The strong winds found in the Cordillera Occidental make the climb more of a challenge.
From La Paz, we drive 4 hours in our private transportation across the Altiplano and past beautiful rock formations called Cañon de los Lamentos , we have the lunch in an Andean landscape and continue until reaching the Sajama National Park (4,000 m). We spend the first night in the small town of Sajama.
Waking up in the stillness of the night at 1:00 am, our adventure begins with a rugged 4x4 journey to the base of Acotango perched at an awe-inspiring at 5,400 meters where we embark on our ascent along an ancient, abandoned mine trail.
As we climb higher, the first light of dawn reveals the breathtaking beauty of the Andean Landscape. The trail leads us along the ridge of a vast crater, where every step brings us closer to the sky. After 4 to 5 hours of determined climbing, we reach victorious at the Bolivian summit of Acotango 6077 meters above sea level. It rewards us with unparalleled, panoramic views in the distant Atacama desert, the vast altiplano and the neighboring volcanoes, later, we can either cross over into Chile and descend the Chilean side of the mountain, or return along the same route down the Bolivian side.
